Abstract
Heterotopic (ectopic, aberrant) pancreas is found in about 2 percent of all routine postmort
ems. In the surgical cases the frequency of heterotopic pancreas is 1:120¡600. The pancreas
originates during fetal development from the ventral and dorsal buds, which by rotaion join up
in a fectus 12§® in length. The generally accepted opinion in that heterotopic pancreas tissue
forms in this stage of fetal development. These aberrant rest are usually chiefly of anatomic
interest, but rarely they arouse clinical concern.
We have experienced a case of intussusception (ileo-ilcal tyoe) due to heterotopic pancreas
arising in 4 month old boy. He was treated with the segmental resection of the ileum and
end-to-end ileo-ileostomy and he is healthy at now.
Local excision in general is sufficient therapy in heterotopic pancreas. For this reason it is
best if specimen segments could be immediately examined in connection with the operatin, since
that might exclude the possibility of a malignant process. Malignant process on the other hand
in aberrant pancreas is exceptional. Goldfarb, Bennett and Monafo (1963) only found two cases
of this kind in the literature up to the year 1963.
The review of literature was made.
